A Bump in the road

The last couple of weeks have been very traumatic mostly for me but also for Craig. Two weeks ago Craig broke his leg while helping me move some sheep. It was a freak accident that could happen to any of us but that day it happened to me. Of course I can't help but feel responsible even though it was not my fault. It was a very bad open fracture on his front leg. The vets were unable to plate and pin the break so Craig has an external fixator on his leg. 8 weeks of crate rest means no more trialing for this year. We are two weeks in and the vets are confident he is going to be OK. He goes in for weekly bandage changes and to check the screws and incision sites.

Just home from surgery

Joe was very concerned for Craig

Very sorry to read about Craig. It must be very hard to be on crate rest for so long.

Hopefully he will be fighting fit again soon.

Vicki,

My Gracie did exactly the same thing last October. The break was repaired with internal fixation, which may need removed in the future if it causes a reaction. We just have to watch it. She also had to be crated because she would stand up on the side of the x-pen to get attention. YMMV.

She was sidelined for two months, then we kept x-raying every month till there was no visible line. She's back in training and trialing good as new, albeit with a long skinny lump running down her radius where the plate is.

Hang in there and best wishes from WV.

Debbie

I bet if you get a swimming pool and do exercise that way when the fixator is removed, you can speed up the strength quickly - I bet you can still take him to the finals!

I am glad he will be okay when it is all over.

the picture of Joe next to Craig is the sweetest thing ever. Give Craig a pat for me! I hope he has a fast, and full recovery. Give me an email when you need ideas of how to keep him busy (but still...)

So sorry to see this happen to Craig. Hope all heals well and that he will be able to work again soon. Thanks for posting the pictures of him, looks like Joe doesn't want to leave his side. Speedy and healthy recovery to Craig and you!!!

Louanne, I am so very sorry for you! It's heartbreaking when something happens to the little furballs. Edmonton has an excellent rehab place - I'm sure Calgary has one too - since they have some of the best vet specialists in Western Canada (that from my vet). Good luck and here's hoping a speedy uncomplicated recovery!

Louanne, so sorry to read this about Craig. Glad you are seeing it as just a "speed bump" and not a road block. Thinking healing thoughts for the boy! ;-)
